Family Ties

So, it must be obvious to most that the family history is of great interest to me and I am now in touch with cousin Rafal in Poland who is also very interested in this subject - he has just sent me some material and some information that I was not aware of before and that I thought I'd share here for anyone interested in knowing more...

I received material from Rafal regarding Andrzej Olszowski, of whom I've written earlier.This blog entry really pertains to his parents and grandparents ...namely Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski – a famous Polish renaissance political writer and His mother was Zofia Dunin, daughter of Krzysztof Koniecpolski and Zofia Koniecpolska...The Koniecpolscy family was one of the most powerful magnatefamilies in 17^th century Poland – check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanis%C5%82aw_Koniecpolski

So, this just shows that by any standard based on pedigree I should really be a brilliant Politician, Warrior, Philosopher and Empire builder, but I am not...

I am a happy Father of Four and who knows, maybe my Fab Four will each take their pick of the lot of qualities (?) sent down through history and make their mark in the family annals...

And maybe they will be living in something similiar to this four up, four down for their families??

My contribution to this will be by going skiing in Sierra Nevada with the kids tomorrow before going back to work on Monday...

By the way, Christmas lasts longer in Spain...on Thursday the Three Wise Men will be passing through town on their Camels...and well behaved children will finally be getting their presents ...and I am going to see if I can find those today...

Andrzej Olszowski herbu Prus (ur. 27 stycznia 1621 w Olszowie, zm. 29 sierpnia 1677 w Gdańsku) – biskup chełmiński w latach 1661-1674, arcybiskup gnieźnieński i prymas Polski od 1674, podkanclerzy koronny 1666-1676.
Pochodził z zamożnej rodziny szlacheckiej, która jednakże dopiero w osobie jego ojca zdobyła krzesło senatorskie. Był najstarszym synem Waleriana Olszowskiego herbu Prus II (1587–1680), wnuka Andrzeja Frycza Modrzewskiego^{[potrzebne źródło]}, kasztelana spicymirskiego, podstolego wieluńskiego i Zofii z Duninów, córki Krzysztofa i Zofii z Koniecpolskich ze Skrzynna Wielkiego. Miał braci Hieronima, Mikołaja i Zygmunta oraz siostrę Katarzynę. Prawdopodobnie jeszcze w dzieciństwie przeznaczony przez rodziców do stanu duchownego, kształcił się w kolegium jezuickim w Kaliszu a następnie w Akademii Krakowskiej. Po ukończeniu studiów przebywał o swojego ciotecznego dziadka, kanonika gnieźnieńskiego Mikołaja Koniecpolskiego u którego przygotowywał się do stanu duchownego, otrzymał wtedy prawdopodobnie niższe święcenia kapłańskie.
W 1642 Koniecpolski przyjął go na swojego koadiutora. W tym samym roku wysłany przez ojca na studia do Włoch, pobierał w latach 1643-1645 nauki w Rzymie na Uniwersytecie Sapienza, gdzie uzyskał doktorat obojga praw. W Rzymie przyjął święcenia kapłańskie, a także w kwietniu 1644, po rezygnacji Koniecpolskiego, został kanonikiem gnieźnieńskim. Zwiedził także Padwę, Neapol i Mediolan. Po krótkim pobycie we Francji, na początku 1646, powrócił do Polski w orszaku nowej żony Władysława IV, królowej Ludwiki Marii Gonzagi. Po powrocie do kraju dzięki pomocy kanclerza prymasa Macieja Łubieńskiego, Andrzeja Trzebickiego, dostał się na dwór prymasowski. W 1648, po przejściu Trzebickiego na dwór królewski, został kanclerzem prymasa. W 1652, po śmierci prymasa Łubieńskiego sam, śladem swojego dawnego protektora, przeszedł na dwór królewski, gdzie dzięki poparciu królowej zrobił karierę.
Podczas potopu najprawdopodobniej przebywał razem z królem na Śląsku. Przełomem w karierze Olszowskiego okazał się rok 1658, kiedy to z inicjatywy królowej został on wysłany jako poseł na elekcję cesarza do Frankfurtu nad Menem, gdzie złożył skargę na postępowanie austriackich wojsk sojuszniczych przebywających w Polsce. Jesienią 1659 został wysłany także do Wiednia, gdzie prowadził rozmowy na temat wycofania wojsk austriackich z Rzeczypospolitej. Poselstwa te niezależnie od swoich skromnych rezultatów jakie przyniosły, zademonstrowały profrancuskie stanowisko polskiego dworu i ukazały dyplomatyczne talenty Olszowskiego.
Za wierność dworowi został Olszowski nagrodzony już z początkiem 1660, kiedy otrzymał urząd referendarza koronnego. Prawdopodobnie wszedł wówczas do ścisłego grona współpracowników królowej Ludwiki Marii, zmierzającej do przeprowadzenia reform ustrojowych. Zaledwie niecały rok później 23 lutego 1661, król mianował go biskupem chełmińskim. Nominacja została zatwierdzona przez papieża 8 sierpnia tego roku, zaś 2 lutego 1662 Olszowski objął rządy w diecezji. Sakrę biskupią otrzymał z rąk biskupa krakowskiego Andrzeja Trzebickiego w kolegiacie warszawskiej. Jako biskup chełmiński zajął się odbudową diecezji zniszczonej w latach potopu i ożywieniem życia religijnego. Przyczynił się do odbudowy kilku świątyń, rewindykował z rąk protestantów kościół św. Jakuba w Toruniu (1667) przekazując go benedyktynkom, popierał misje prowadzone przez jezuitów, w Toruniu wznowił procesje Bożego Ciała, 17 kwietnia 1665 erygował w kapitule prebendę kanonika penitencjarza. W latach 1667-1672 z jego polecenia kanonik Jan Ludwik Strzesz przeprowadził bardzo dokładną wizytację diecezji.
Zasiadłszy w senacie Olszowski niespodziewanie dla wszystkich nie poparł planów reform dworu królewskiego przedstawionych na sejmach w 1661 i 1662. W 1664 na sejmie jesiennym natomiast, bronił oskarżonego o zdradę marszałka Jerzego Lubomirskiego. Podczas walk rokoszowych nie odegrał ważniejszej roli usuwając się w cień, a następnie wyjeżdżając na kurację do Schwarzbach k. Moguncji. Rezygnacja króla z planów reform umożliwiła mu dalszą karierę. Po powrocie do kraju bowiem z końcem 1666, uzyskał pieczęć podkanclerską.
W czasie bezkrólewia po abdykacji Jana Kazimierza rzucił myśl wyboru Polaka - "Piasta" i był głównym architektem wyboru Michała Korybuta Wiśniowieckiego. Podczas rządów Michała Korybuta Wiśniowieckiego oraz w początku rządów Jana III Sobieskiego (2 lutego 1676 koronował go na Wawelu) posiadał bardzo duże wpływy na politykę tych władców.
W swoim testamencie swój majątek (80 000 złotych) przekazał na budowę świątyni katolickiej w protestanckim Gdańsku. Za te pieniądze została zbudowana Kaplica Królewska. Nagrobek prymasa znajduje się w katedrze gnieźnieńskiej. Nagrobek Waleriana Olszowskiego (ojca prymasa) znajduje się w kościele św. Wawrzyńca w Stolcu.

Autumn is coming and hopefully a return to normal everyday rythm...after three months it looks like the kids are looking forward to going back to school and especially now that Alex will be going to the same school as Marcus - Leon XIII which is up the road from us...

Next month we will be having quite a few visitors which will be lovely - especially the fact that we will be getting a new au pair; Aidan from the US which will be very helpful in ensuring a smooth running of the house...

And it is also nice to have slightly cooler nights...a good season is coming up...

Moving thoughts (take 16)

we are once again planning a move - this time not that far, though - just 225 meters from here, but as you can imagine it still entails a great deal of logistics and visits to Ikea...

What would the world be like without Ikea?? And how would we be able to impulsively go out and buy furniture and kitchen goods on a saturday?? Mind you the impulse took us just about 7 hours and the kids were in the play-place three times so we could get organized...

The good thing is that we will receive the stuff in ten days time and the people bringing the things will be assembling it all...that could have taken me a full week to get a bed to look like a bed and a dining room table to look something like a dining room table...

The place we've found is really close to where we are now - with the advantage that we will have a real contract that doesn't leave us with the feeling of uncertainty of when we should move...the place is smaller but with a great view and also great possibilities for the kids to make friends...and there is a swimming pool too...

So, instead of our hacienda - next time we'll be in our flat overlooking the City and port - we might even be sharing a Manzanilla with you??

Here is a link on Wikipedia that tells about my Grandmothers family home Moniaki near Lublin. The manor house was moved after the war to be a part of a outdoor museum near Janowiec - we celebrated my cousin Kuba's wedding there in the late 80's...a beautiful house..

I hope to travel through Poland sometime soon with the family and visit Moniaki amongst other things...

This painting used to hang (in one variant) in the hall of my Grandparenst home in Hellerup - if I remember correctly the other variant has an Eagle sweeping down to grab her. It's called La frileuse

Ready for Easter holidays

we took the car on a European Roadtrip over the weekend - and a surprisingly pleasant experience I must say...and not the thing you'd think with two kids on the back seat, but an iPad and an iPhone can save the day with games and movies...

It took two and half days and was fairly relaxing switching every two hours between me and Cloti...

First night in Burgos, second night in Valencennes and next night in Hornbaek...

Emma and Victor coming on saturday...yippee - friends will be staying up here as well so plenty of friends here for the kids to play with...

Schools and culture shocks

So it has been some time since my last entry and this could have something to do with the move and lots do do at work...and Facebook taking over some of the blogging as well...but would just like to make a point of the only real culture shock we have been realizing after our move to Malaga...

Our Alexander has been suffering pretty badly after the move since he has always been cool and a smooth talker at school and now suddenly he is not...also he has been taught to speak nicely and with respect to his classmates and teachers whereas that does not seem to be a high priority at his school - as well as noise and general mayhem in the school yard seems to be more the order of the day..it's his birthday on monday and all he wants is a new school...

So, Clotilde and he have been looking at schools during the day in the vain hope that we might be able to choose something better for his temper.

We'll be seeing if we have any luck once the lottery is finished at the end of March...

So he seems to the one suffering a culture chock of sorts, but then he came from Kindergarten with 4 grown ups for 20 kids to a school class of 25 kids and one grown up...so who wouldn't be?

Hi again,

thanks to Facebook I've now "met" one of our cousins in Poland that I didn't know of.

Rafal Olszowski reached out to investigate if we were from the same family and true enough by
a quick bit of investigation we found out that we were from the same branch. Our surname has a postfix Herb "Prus II" this means we are part of the Prus II Szlachta "clan" - there may be other families with the Olszowski surname but if they don't have the same postfix then we are not from the same family. Actually, it is my understanding that the Postfix is more important than the name - or at least used to be.

Rafal sent me the following scan from an old book that show our ancestor Walerian's grave...

He was the first senator of the family and father of the most famous ancestor Andrzej Olszowski who was Primate of the Catholic church in Poland...

What a great feeling of belonging and feeling at ease and at home in our rented house in Pedregalejo a suburb three kms from the Bullring in the centre of Malaga.

The kids seem to be very happy - even with the change and humdrum of moving house/country...even Emma and Victor seem happy, despite the move away from them, when I speak to the over Skype. I showed them the house while carrying the laptop around the house and garden...lot's of oohs, and ahhhs and ' cant't wait..' They'll be here in a month for a weeks holiday...

We've been making sure to make the most of having the beach 7 minutes walk away, but yesterday our bikes arrived so we zipped down to the promenade for a dip and a break fron the emptying of boxes - Cloti rode the Christiania Bike with Marcus and Alex in front armed with plastic submachine...that earned some attention...even my rusty old Remington bike with a dried up leather seat was a head turner...here everyone has a racing bike or Mountain bike ...

It's very nice to have our furniture and other stuff again...and have more or less already got everything in place...Pictures and video clips should be on their way...

So now we are so close I've become very calm - even though we still have stuff to do and bags to pack...
as well as our everyday normal day jobs...best not forget those...?!

Cloti has gone to Stockholm today to organize a conference for the EDA and I'm in charge of the kids till friday - I should
be on my way to bed but I guess my blood is running a bit too fast for that even though I've just said I'm calm.

So, on saturday at 12.25 we're OFF to our new home in Malaga where we hope to get lots of visiting friends from near and far.

Moving thoughts part 2 - on a knife's edge...

Wow, this is really not an easy feat we've taken on...Maybe I've even expanded my usable brain cells in the process?? Despite the stress, I feel pretty robust, and for a range of reasons have no doubt as to the pro's of moving...

So now we are pretty far and beyond the point of no return...

Obviously: Decide to move - (biggest) tick
Jobs - Ok (or...now petty details such as local contracts etc need to be sorted)
City/area to live - done
suitable house - see below in earlier entry
talk to accountants/tax advisors - underway
open bank account - done
register with authorities in Spain - Done, now only need to sort out work and residence premits
find schools - done - Marcus (tick), Alex (still not known)
rent and pack house in CPH - House rented, House nearly packe - movers coming on wednesday next week...
Plan on when and where to see the kids...(well...that's my biggest concern) I am letting them down by leaving and I have
to make sure I make it up to them in some way - I hope that over time this will be seen as a 'not so bad' thing

plus plus many more things that will pop up when it's too late...

Just now we are emptying the kitchen and throwing out a bunch of stuff - removers will be here wednesday morning...

so this moving stuff is something rather stressful - and moving jobs at the same time as well as schools and country doesn't help..

But it certainly adds vitality and spice to the normal day and that is good - not that this project just landed in our lap with no prior planning or thought - we've aimed for this to happen since november some 16 months ago and now finally we are reaching our goal..

I feel a bit like the bullfighter - to use a suitable analogy - in the moment of thruth (el momento de la verdad) when he is posing right in front of the bull aiming for the tiny spot between the bulls shoulders where the sword must hit while the bull and he storm towards each other...You need to maintain your calm even though your mind and heart are full of emotions and uncertainties of what the future will bring...

We are ticking off the things that need to happen for this move to Malaga to happen...

Obviously: Decide to move - tick
Jobs - Ok
City/area to live - done
suitable house - Ok
talk to accountants/tax advisors - underway
open bank account - done
register with authorities in Spain - underway
find schools - done - but no room
rent and pack house in CPH - not yet

plus plus many more things that will pop up when it's too late...

But this is a good project for me personally and even though I recognize there are costs related to this, especially regarding our life with Emma & Victor that will change - I hope though that there will benefits also and not just sadness...at least this is what I think and will be working to ensure...

Nuestra Casa en Malaga - Our House in Malaga

we've found this lovely house in Pedregalejo Alto 3 kms from the centre of Malaga. 4/5 bedrooms, two bathrooms and a loo - a lovely garden and a great ambience...we've rented it from 1st july...

I made a quick video when there the last time and I am very sorry for the quality as I was in a rush since I was running out of room on my camera..

We will be adding our own furniture to the living room and some other bits and bobs but in essence we will keep the house as is...maybe we'll remove some of the plastic garden furniture...

We hope that you will come and visit...

What a great opportunity it was to get to know more of southern Spain and especially the Costa del Sol that was much better than I remember...Malaga was a pleasant surprise and a potential city for a future base.

But even though it was great it is lovely to be back and have a nights sleep in your own bed...and surrounded by your own things...I guess it is stating the obvious but there you go...

Incommunicado - on holiday

Am more or less incommunicado at the moment as my laptop is very unreliable and is up and online now for the first time in three weeks and I am hoping that I have received some valuable software updates to the computer...am enjoying a free wifi connection at a bar near the flat in Estepona...

So anyway I also lost my phone for a few days (in a nappy bag!) and had a colleague to transfer all calls to Clotilde's new iPhone (wow that is a swanky phone - will need to get my own!)...Not the best thing to do with a present...my colleague is on holiday at the moment as well so cannot get the call transfer cancelled...

So good excuses to be incommunicado, but for a webwreck like myself this doesn't mean peace of mind or relaxation...on the contrary...

Despite all this we are now truly enjoying our holiday - with only the tewo small kids and a recent arrival of Paulina (our au-pair) that can mean a bit more 'social life' with Clotilde...:-)

Estepona and Malaga have really impressed be in a positive way...love it...but Sotogrande impressed me even more...saw The Rock today, now that was a disappointment..

So lotsa love from Costa del Sol and the bar whatever its called that I'm in...

wow - if only I could have some medication to ensure I get a stabilized hormonal experience...am I reaching Puberty or am I feeling the strain from stress at work and at home??? I do know that my head is filled with the summer holiday that I can see getting nearer and nearer...

Just so I do not forget...this is amazing - 3-4 weeks with constant sunshine and mild weather and only rain 3 times (at night)...

And since Mischa isn't here anylonger - no more calls from people wondering whether I own a black dog that is in the lake or asking passersby to throw sticks...and no more puh on the lawn...so now I can roll around on the grass with the kids without putting an ear in a garden 'pancake'...

So all in all alovely spring with feelings of summer...

Nutcracker Suite

I feel more or less recovered after the Nutcracker Suite yesterday - starring the Blobski Bros. Jan & Nicolas...

Upon entering the clinic the secretary received us with a big grin - It seems unusual that two brothers meet up for a synchronized sterilization procedure...both with 4 kids to their name..
The doctor and nurses where laughing their heads off and enjoyed slicing and dicing the two
Olszowski brothers...

I was getting worried that they had forgotten to give me anesthetics and where getting ready to cut...but they quickly fixed that with a swift jab and with no time to waste went to work...

Am slightly selfconscious when walking about today, but am fine and in no pain...:-)

I hope Jan feels the same...

now, this is not the first time that I witness the sad decline of the danish males decline and total domestication, but...

Clotilde and I go out together at least once a week for a coffee, drink or to go to the cinema, but by now it seems that everyone that we meet are females with their friends..In one café this evening I was the only other male (apart from one plus two bartenders) all the other tables where occupied by women chatting, eating, drinking...

Their men I suppose were at home taking care of the kids..

Men all over the world!! (or at least in Denmark) liberate yourselves of those chains...

ahhh...it seems that my deal with Cloti is starting to work...during weekends she will take the kids one morning and I the next. But sofar the kids have always managed to get me out of bed even though it was not really my turn, but yesterday turned in to one of those perfect days...

I woke up at 10 o'clock with Marcus snoring softly by my side...was allowed an hour to read enjoyed a long luxurious shower, breakfast and late lunch with Didi, Natasha, Christian all visiting...in the evening to the cinema with Didi to watch "Men that hate women" (Swedish thriller - very good) and finally a plate of Shawarma meat, hummus and salad and pita bread topped with a lovely chilli sauce...that is a perfect day for me...

Alexander's bad in'flu'ence...

Last monday Alex brought a flu epidemic with him from the nursery...I was hit wednesday...and from then on all have been hit...Victor, Emma , Marcus and I am still not OK. Cloti and Paulina caught it (to some extent) as well...but they must have some sort of extra-terrestrial bio-defence system as they were hardly touched by the symptoms...or maybe its by the sheer fact that they are women....

I only remember my mother really in bed once due to a flu or cold...she was always in ship shape condition to help the children and men in the house.

Just like Clotilde...tusinde tak...without your help this week the kids would not have survived...and Paulina as well not to forget...

Now it is just Marcus and me still left in the sofa watching Little Einsteins...I tried working yesterday but am still not through...

I haven't cried, but I feel as though I have..

Mischa has entered 3 weeks initial training to see if she is able to continue as a Blind Dog.

The lady, Gitte, who came to pick her up was very sweet and Mischa was very much at ease and cuddly, friendly with her so I really think she's going to enjoy the next couple of weeks.

If she gets her 'wings' in three weeks they start in earnest with real training. I've been promised pictures of her along the way, but they say that it is best not to see her again later on as that could be difficult...

She has been sweet, even though she has eaten one Palm Treo 680 smartphone, some remote controls, several shoes...her digestion hasn't taken any damage it seems - also she ate a full tinfoil packaged Liver pate last week and it didn't seem to make much of an impression.

Mischa you are sweet and we will miss you very much...

Well, I think we are coming to a sad conclusion regarding Mischa and we should know more tomorrow and after a possible 3 weeks trial with a Blind Dog trainer...A lady will turn up tomorrow midday and get introduced to Mischa.. we'll see if she is suited for Blind Dog duty then and there and after three weeks trial we'll know if she will stay or come back to us...

This has been a very difficult decision for me to make, but since I have already admitted to my mistake I must face the music..

Really, the problem has been me and the family and has nothing to do with Mischa - we've had too many children & no-one to make sure that Mischa is stimulated and taken care of (other than a cuddle and a kiss and a few sticks in the garden..).

I hope that Mischa is qualified and that she can give all her love and energy to a needy. Just have a look at her here playing in the garden.

I must admit one of my biggest mistakes ever was buying Mischa just as Marcus was getting ready to arrive into this world...at the time I did realize that it would be complicated having two babies at the same time but thought that we'd be able to surpass any of the challenges...

But then now I must admit that that probably was not the best of my decisions (although I did confer with my wife)...I think we must decide to find a new home for her and it breaks my heart...I just cannot give her the time and attention she's entitled to (maybe 4 kids take up too much of my energy for that) so I think we are coming to a conclusion that we should find her a new home...

And just as she's growing up and becoming sweet and mellow...

the whole cinema was Rocking..

I had a great day out yesterday with 9 friends/colleagues at a place called Hardball Heaven...we were playing war in the forest with guns that looked like the real deal and running about. With the difference that we could be revived after a few minutes and re-enter the game...

It's great fun but makes you think how easy it must be to get shot in real combat...here we were shooting with little white plastic bullets that fly more or less like a banana...and also with 600 shots in the magazine instead of 30..

Good fun but hell trying to organize - especially as I realize I am one of the only people (of my age) that is interested in organizing things like this..

last weekend I was on the verge of a meltdown...I love my kids as most who venture to this blog would know but my patience was spent this weekend and I just couldn't bear listening to whines from the kids...My brain would fry into a red hot temper just as when I was trying to strangle Dominic or hunting Didi with a croquet mallet...no danger to the kids though...phew...I have been in an attempted Lotus position and singing "omnipatnabrummmm" for a few minutes and now I feel much better...

Also we've accidentally now got a new au-pair (Paulina, Ecuador) who needed a new home (and we needed help) so we're in luck...Miruna who was with us was a great help with the kids and they loved her very much - Paulina hit it off really well yesterday with Marcus and Alex is coming round..

I was in Budapest last week for a Sun Govt, Education and Healthcare training
where 250 global colleagues met to share ideas for this Fiscal Year..I'd been
asked to be Master of Ceremony which was an honour, but must admit, that it makes
me more nervous standing on a stage in front of colleagues and peers, than in front
of customers...

It went well it seems..focus was on keeping time rather than being the main
protagonist..that may have been part of the success..

one of Didi's well connected friends got us into the ominously named Golden Circle at George Michael's last concert of the 25Live tour at I've never been to anything like it...we had huddled close to the stage but thought we were still quite far away...what we hadn't noticed was that an finger of the stage was less than a hundred meters away and that was just bloody cool...

and it's not as cool as the song goes...apparently one of my colleagues has had something similar for more that 3-4 weeks! Anyway tests came back and showed signs of a...virus...best excuse to not fix me...today is saturday and I had a temperature since tuesday last week and have been really weak one week before that...

I am still weak have a temperature but hopefully not as high as the day before yesterday where I finished 6 days with 39 degrees...

One good things is that my mind was starting to kick in with all sorts of weird ideas as to what is wrong and at least then a virus helps...

I've got an important meeting all day tuesday and hope that I am well enough to attend...as it's my meeting might be good to be around...

Stuck in bed with a bad book...

I am currently stuck in bed with a fever ranging between 38-39 degrees centigrades
and have been bed ridden pretty much since friday...It's very unusual as I am not coughing, sneezing or on the loo constantly...am awaiting results from the doctor that should be able to say more tomorrow...if he says it's a virus I think I might wring his neck...sofar he has never actually fixed anything with pills, bandages og any sort of intervention and that leaves me stuck feeling bad -

but what is even worse is that I am reading a really bad book by Gerald Seymour called "Timebomb"...about ex-KGB officers, Russki Mafia and Mujahadeens that want to deal in a nuclear warhead...at the moment they are in Poland and Gerald Seymour doesn't seem to have been updated on the situation for christian Poles and Jews during the war and is spreading old stories about how nasty the Poles where towards their Jewish neighbours...Might I suggest you read a bit of updated history on this subject by Prof. Norman Davies? The Poles where not much better off than the jews and quite a large part of the population helped the Jews in their distress...but remember they could hardly protect themselves...

I just cannot recommend it ...

ahhh, it's good to be back at the office and relax after two weeks holiday with the kids...

All is quiet on the work front and it seems that the danish holiday season is now stretched over a period of 1.5 months instead of the 3 weeks that was normal during the "Industrial Age"...It does make life a bit more difficult hen your goals are quarter based...but still it's enjoyable to have a bit of R'n'R after a successful FY08...

My ambitions for the next (FY) year are:

1. Make sure my kids continue their good behavioral trend - see pics of them and the family on my Picasa web album here or go check out a couple of my videos here

2. Get enough funding to re-start my Historic Racing "career"

3. Re-assemble our Hobie 16 for next summer

4. Get a license to manage/rent a Grand Banks motor yacht in Spain for my summer holidays with the family...

Just a question of Motivation

A few weeks ago Victor said that he didn't expect to see the tree hut that I've talked about since we moved in would ever become reality: I'd been talking about it for so long and since nothing seemed to be actually happening in the matter he just thought he'd mention this to me...I guess to make me stop talking...

The project has been developing in my head over a long time and now I am getting there...I am going to include a swing that will carry the kids nearly 30 meters through the garden and have started collecting the required equipment...

I cut that branches that would otherwise be in the way this evening so now I am starting to get down to business...

I hope that I'll finish before Emma and Victor get back from their summer holidays with Hellen in Turkey..

We've just been spending two wonderful weeks in Hornbæk with typical danish summer with showers but it was wonderful to be together all of us...

Marcus enjoyed his freedom and has grown to boyhood and has left babyhood behind...and I am removing all evidence of babystuff...I've chucked his bottles, plastic mugs with handles, the gate on the stairs, the thing on his bed so he doesn't fall out...now all we need is a bit more motivation go get rid of his dummies and nappies...

On page 334 there is a brief mention of a network called 'Gustav' which had a cell at Stockholm 'known as "Ilgrim", and headed by Lt. Olszowski'.

Today is V-Day in Denmark. This is the day that the Germans Troops in Northern Germany, Denmark and several other countries surrendered to Montgomery.

Just 300 metres from our house is the Memorial to the Fallen Resistance Fighters - Mindelunden. At this spot the Gestapo and their Danish helpers, the Schalburg Korps, executed several hundred resistance fighters and buried them without any ceremony...

When I was young we used to come here every year with my maternal Grandfather, Gerald Salicath, and my mother and her husband and listen to the student choirs and watch the Territorial Army remember and show respect to the fallen. I haven't been there to celebrate for maybe more than 15 years. We were there this evening - Cloti for the first time. It was a beautiful spring evening with lots of people - both young and old...I was quite impressed that their were so many of our own generation..it's important to remember...

We walked along the wall with names and birthdays and deathdays and it struck me that most died during the last 1 1/2 years of the war...As I've written earlier Denmark was not considered an ally till very late in the war due to a policy of collaboration with the germans. This was a fact that always was something that brought shame on my grandfather and he spoke of it often and I guess that his skepticism of authorities lies in the fact that the politicians that supported that policy of collaboration returned to their chairs in Folketinget after the war.

My grandfather turns out to have had codename D 7 under the R 34 in the British Secret Intelligence Service organization in Denmark and is mentioned in two books that I know of and seems to have been a veteran in as much that he was already active from 1941. The author to one of the books Hans Christian Berg said he thought he may have been a part of SIS already before the war (in Denmark?).

My paternal grandfather, Tadeusz Olszowski, had already been in active service for more than 1 1/2 years before the germans came to Denmark. He had to leave my grandmother and my uncle and father to fend for themselves for the next 6 years.

After ensuring the Polish merchant fleet didn't fall into german hands he went to France with the Polish Army and escaped via Dieppe - after two years in Scotland he was sent to work as an Intelligence Officer in Malmø.

Anyway - the perspective of having "Norwegian Conditions" in Denmark instead of Collaboration (like Vichy) would invariably have required more german soldiers stationed here leaving other places, like Poland, with fewer enemy soldiers in their backyard.

So - the prosperity and peace we are currently enjoying need to be protected. The EU is a good forum to ensure that the peace is held. Let's get Denmark to take part a a full member - now, please...

What is your opnion - is YouTube a dangerous place to post home videos compared to
posting it to my blog? I am not presuming that any videos that I'd be posting would be found by anyone else than those that specifically look for e.g. Olszowski and there aren't that many that have that fetich? But in someones opinion it's fine to post the same content (video) to Olszowski.com...this I cannot see any sense in.

You may sense a difference of opinion on what and where one can post content...and I'd be interested to uderstand whether I am off on a dangerous path...kindly enlighten me with your comments...Thanks

No more nappies?

At least where Alex is concerned...If you haven't tried living with this you may not understand my desperation and desire for our project to succeed...

Alex has not been using a nappy since friday last week (apart from during the night) and is doing well...with the obvious accidents mind you, but that's to be expected...

I am not sure that he's actually pooed since Friday...hmm - he might explode anytime now...

Keeping my fingers, arms and legs crossed...I just calculated that I've probably changed half (at least!) of 19.710 dirty nappies - I would now also like to thank the fabulous paper inventions that make nappies elastic so I didn't have to wash nappies but could throw them in a "Sangenic" dispenser - another great invention...

I wonder whether Marcus could loose his nappy during the summer...If only...please...

After the crash during practice the car got put together again thanks to a donation of parts by Michael Elsbjerg and by the big help of the team...I tore holes in the bottom of the car with the chair due to the impact and all the wheels collapsed underneath so to be able to start 4 hrs later was a miracle...

so I've got a Mac now and it is soooo cool an pretty easy to move to ..it has iMovie and suddenly it is easy to extract videos and add titles and effects etc..sofar you can enjoy me crashing the Mini against a concrete barrier at the end of the long straight at Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix 2003...during training of course...got the car back together again for the race in the afternoon tho..

The consequence of collaboration?

A thing my maternal grand father taught me at an early stage in life was that the danish policy of collaboration during most of the second world war was a great shame. He was actually amongst the very few who attempted to show the allies that the Danes weren't Nazi helpers but should be seen as being part of the allies. For his contribution his two sons drowned under the escape to Sweden and a MBE from Great Britain.

If Denmark had contributed more actively maybe there would have been more German troops in Denmark which would have helped numerous other countries (like Poland)...

A new danish film (Flammen og Citronen) shows a glimpse of what life must have been like - including the dillemmas of collaboration and the doubt and uncertain loyalties...If it comes to a theatre near you I can recommend this movie.

The film has inspired me to once again start looking for more details of my Morfars activities.
